Black Bears
Black bears are charismatic animals often making people say, “how did they get there”. Over the last few years of working in Knight Inlet I have found it very hard to photograph them as they tend to be in hard to reach places and they move in the morning and evening when the light is low.
Black bears are excellent climbers and can be found feeding in the most unlikely of places. They climb down shear rock faces to access mussel fields by the shores edge. As a result of the high grizzly population in Knight Inlet they tend to island hop more, swimming from mainland to islands back and forth. Mothers can have up to four cubs, looking after them for two years. In their first year, you can often see them climbing trees or running along a cliff with a sixty-foot drop.
